This fun KitchenAid/Susan Komen Foundation campaign was created to help promote awareness and help fund the fight against breast cancer.
Happy October! There's so much I love about October; cool evenings, crisp morning walks and leaves in dazzling hues of crimson, saffron, amber, persimmon and a zillion other shades I can't even describe. I love how one by one, they release their grip, spinning and flittering silently to a waiting earth. Chrysanthemums, adorned in cheerful autumn hues greet me from doorsteps, garden beds and window boxes everywhere. October also makes me think of hayrides, pumpkin carving, harvest celebrations, spooks and goblins.
There's something else really special about October. For the past thirty-one years, October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's become international in scope, with a wide variety of organized events including walks, runs and the pink illumination of landmark buildings. All of this is done to increase awareness of breast cancer and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.
When I was asked recently to be participate in KitchenAid's campaign to promote this worthy cause, I was thrilled. I clearly remember receiving the call years ago, with the news that my mom had breast cancer. Being a nurse (read: knowing too much), I was quite certain that this was the "beginning of the end" for her.
I'm happy to say, I was wrong. She not only survived that incident, but another bout with breast cancer 10 years later. Mom went through two mastectomies and chemotherapy. But guess what? She went on to live a very productive life and died many years later at the ripe old age of 92. I'm so grateful for the research and advances that have been made in this major health battle!
The KitchenAid campaign is called 10,000 Cupcakes, One Great Cause. They way it works is pretty awesome. KitchenAid will donate up to $10,000 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation this October - and you can be part of it! For every cupcake you make and share on Instagram and/or Twitter, they will donate $1. You can enter as often as you want! So you get to have fun in the kitchen while helping this wonderful cause.
Not only that, but the kind people over at KitchenAid have offered to give away the most beautiful mixer you'll ever have the pleasure of meeting. Yes, one lucky Café reader will receive KitchenAid's Raspberry Ice Artisan Mixer. It comes with a really classy glass bowl but the giveaway winner will also receive the adorable Pink Polka Dot Bowl.
What are the requirements enter the giveaway? It's easy! Just participate in the 10,000 Cupcakes campaign by making a batch of cupcakes. This mixer is so pretty! Unfortunately, i do not have a twitter or Instagram account. The last cupcakes I made was this past weekend during hurricane Matthew here in NC. They were dark chocolate with a nutella buttercream frosting. Just the best for staying in and enjoying the time with loved ones.
(Hopefully you'll count my post as an entry to win this mixer ?! thanks!)

Chris, I did post something on Facebook, because the comment box was not showing up on the website when I tried to post here. Thank you for supporting such a great cause. My aunt lost her battle with breast cancer in 1979 at the age of 30. She was diagnosed at the age of 28. Thanks to the huge increase in bringing awareness and money raised for detection, treatment and a cure, more and more women are winning their battles. My mom is a 30 year survivor this November. Our family (and many others who's lives she has touched) are blessed to still have her in our lives. I posted my lemon cupcakes with lemon frosting on Instagram. Beautiful mixer and bowl, but really beautiful cause. Thanks again.

This color mixer and the polka dot bowl is absolutely fabulous and what a wonderful cause it celebrates. Your story of your mother's survival is one of the best I have ever heard, and it has to be so encouraging to someone who has received the diagnosis. My own mother had a close friend who had it as a young woman, and she, too, lived till her nineties. Progress is being made, and it is commendable the way some of the big companies have gotten on board to support research. Your cupcakes look divine -- can't wait to see how you made the top!
Chris Scheuer says
Thank you Ellen, it is a wonderful cause and I love the KitchenAid is making it so fun and easy to help. You'll love the topping technique. It looks fancy but it's honestly, so easy and fun to do. It would be a great project to do with kids!
