London - why we love it!

Some of you already know (from our last post), that The Café has been temporarily transported to the other side of The Pond. We're visiting our daughter and her family in London and having the time of our lives. Many of our readers have asked that we share pictures, so Scott and I have put together a pictorial post or two of our trip. These posts will be more travel related, but since we love exploring food wherever we go, we'll sneak some in here and there. It's just part of who we are!

Generally, we visit our family in London each spring and again in the fall, (we can't stay away from those grandkiddos for too long) and we've learned to love so many things about this bustling city of eight million. And though we have enjoyed seeing many of the famous London tourist attractions, for us it's the classic, everyday elements of this charming city that have us so smitten. What elements you say? Glad you asked!

the croissants...

We may not be in France, but only the narrow (21 mile) English Channel separates the two countries. The art of croissant making has definitely travelled across the water (or perhaps it came via the Chunnel). They are large, amazingly delicious and super flaky!

the flowers...

I'm beginning to believe that everyone in England has a green thumb. Whether it's part of the right of passage here for little Brit gardeners, or the maritime, misty, moisty climate; it seems that, wherever we roam, there are verdant blooming plants growing out of the tiniest little nooks and crannies. There are also abundant flowers for sale in every hue imaginable at small outdoor markets strewn liberally throughout the city.

the River Thames...

Strolling or biking down the River is one of our favorite pastimes. We love to people watch, river watch, push babies or just admire the myriad of changing looks the water takes on. By day or by night, the River Thames is a lovely sight indeed.

the markets...

Open air markets can be found all over the city; with the freshest, most beautiful produce, flowers, meat, eggs, fish, bread, etc. Some of them are open every day of the week and some just on Saturdays. I can hardly control myself at these delightful foodie lover havens.

Well, that's a little glimpse of the London we love. We'll be sharing more London pics later in the week, but be sure to check back Thursday for a fun, new recipe. It's an easy, but super delicious side you'll want for the upcoming holidays; Make Ahead Green Beans with Lemon Herb Panko Crumbs. If you've been looking for the perfect side, we definitely gotcha covered!

Make Ahead Green Beans - fresh, tender green beans with a buttery panko and herb topping, a far cry from a green bean casserole but this will be just as well loved!

  7. Thanks so much for sharing, Chris and Scott! It is such fun traveling vicariously through your London posts! Its not often that one has the opportunity in life to travel repeatedly to a "foreign" location, so often that it becomes a place you miss when you are home! How wonderful that you are able to share the wonders of London with your grandchildren!
