What is brioche?

Brioche is a classic French pastry/dough that's made with LOTS  butter, eggs and milk . It's mildly sweet and competes in popularity with baguettes as a beloved French staple.

The home of brioche

We happen to be in France as I'm writing this post and we've enjoyed lots of delicious brioche along the way. This morning we wandered through a tiny, French village on the River Seine. Although the population of this little hamlet is only 500, there was (of course) a delightful Boulangerie (bakery) on the main street.

Amazing aromas wafted through the air as we walked past, beckoning us in the door. Baguettes, croissants, pan au raisin, pan au chocolat and a barrage of other delightful confections greeted our eyes. But knowing that I was planning to share this post today, it was the brioche that caught my attention. The loaves were rustic, gnarly and HUGE.

The boulangerie sold it the loaf or by the slice. We couldn't resist ordering a slice (you know, just so I could get in the mood to write this post, haha!). The bread was buttery and super flavorful. The girl who waited on us relayed that the boulanger (baker) started at 3AM  in order to have fresh brioche ready by the time the doors opened at 9.

Making brioche in France is not for the faint at heart as it involves lots of mixing and kneading. I call our collection of brioche recipes, "French-inspired because they include all the same ingredienets but are MUCH easier to make with no kneading necessary.

Brioche, whether the real deal or one of our easy recipes, makes wonderful sandwich bread, hamburger buns, dinner rolls or a breakfast treat. Each recipe includes lots of tips and tricks to ensure success. Give them a try and be sure to let us know how they turned out. Enjoy!
