  4. The recipe for molasses cookies asks for shortening. I avoid shortening in food because it clogs arteries and is an artificial ingredient. Can butter or a vegetable oil be substituted?

  5. I really love making the Christmas tree shortbread; love the marbling, even going tie-dyed. As a baker in the past I used to make huge sheetpan fulls, and I'd take a brush after glazing them and just fling another contrasting glaze across the pans...abstract and so much fun!
